The Role of HuR in HIV related COPD
Overview
- Help expand, coordinate, and optimize COPD research efforts
- Improve methods for earliest detection and diagnosis and develop effective strategies for preventing the onset and progression of COPD
- Promote research that can lead to strategies that help prevent the onset and progression of COPD and improve the quality of COPD care and management
Activity Description
This NHLBI-funded research activity is being carried out by Suny Downstate Medical Center.HIV infection accelerates the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in people living with HIV. The RNA binding protein Human Antigen R (HuR) regulates global expression and supports the production of key repair mediators in the airway epithelium. This proposal will advance public health by determining how cigarette smoke and HIV virus promote airflow obstruction and airway remodeling in HIV by repressing HuR to alter the airway epithelial transcriptome.
