Sexual dimorphism in susceptibility to emphysematous tissue injury
Overview
Organization: National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute
Start Date: 06/2023
End Date: Ongoing
Primary Goal: Goal 4: Increase and sustain research to better understand the prevention, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and management of COPD.
Objective(s): - Help expand, coordinate, and optimize COPD research efforts
Collaboration: University of Virginia
Activity Type: Research
Emphysema is a significant chronic disease with substantial morbidity and mortality and is resistant to most therapies because it is caused by irreversible anatomic destruction. Not much is known about the effects of sex differences on cellular abnormalities in emphysematous damage. Therefore, our proposal can provide critical information to assess the risk, identify the disease processes, and help develop strategies to mitigate and treat emphysema tailored with consideration for sex differences.
