  • Increase the effectiveness and variety of outreach communication campaigns and activities that utilize evidence-based approaches to raise awareness of COPD, particularly among those at high risk, and help people diagnosed with COPD manage the disease
  • Improve access to care for people with COPD, particularly for those in hard-to reach areas

Activity Description

This free webinar featured presentations by Medicare employees and contractors discussing how to navigate the Medicare system so patients can get the oxygen and care they need. Topics covered included:

 Is there a limit on the number of tanks patients can receive?
 What should patients do if they may switch supplier or oxygen systems?
 Can current oxygen system be taken away without patient consent?
 Can patient get a portable oxygen concentrator? Who maintains it?
 What are patients and suppliers rights and responsibilities?

In addition to the above topics, the webinar focused on the recent updates to the CMS booklet "“Medicare Coverage of Durable Medical Equipment". Additionally, participants were educated on how to navigate CMS’s Immediate Advocacy Program. This was Part I of a three-part webinar series on Medicare & oxygen therapy.

Advice or Lessons Learned

Allow participants to submit questions in writing rather than in real time in order to keep the flow of the webinar steady. We encouraged questions to be submitted in advance, and we accepted written questions from the live participants that were answered after the formal presentation. Answers to any questions that were not answered live due to time constraints were posted on the USCC website, along with a video recording of the webinar.
