Activity Description

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) awards funding to research organizations to implement activities that further the goals and objectives of the COPD National Action Plan. For fiscal year 2021, NHLBI awarded large research grants to nine organizations to support their efforts in raising awareness to better understand the prevention, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and management of COPD. Organizations funded this cycle include: Brigham and Women’s Hospital; Johns Hopkins University; University of Alabama at Birmingham; University of Massachusetts Medical School Worcester; University of Michigan at Ann Arbor; University of Pennsylvania; University of Pittsburgh at Pittsburgh; University of Virginia; and Weill Medical College of Cornell University.

Funded research topics included:
• COPD cachexia: deciphering the impact of antioxidants, iron and mitochondrial function using 'omics approaches;
• COPD Subtypes and Early Prediction using Integrative Probabilistic Graphical Models;
• Distinct and Overlapping Pathways of Fibrosis and Emphysema in Cigarette Smokers;
• 1/2 Doxycycline for Emphysema in People Living with HIV: The DEPTH Trial;
• 2/2 Doxycycline for Emphysema in People Living with HIV: The DEPTH Trial;
• Hepatocyte Growth Factor Signaling and Airspace Maintenance;
• Identifying Protein-Protein Network Interactions between COPD Susceptibility Genes;
• Improving shared decision making in lung disease;
• Integrative genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic studies of pulmonary function and COPD;
• Models and Gene Therapies for AAT Deficiency;
• Neurobiology of the Bronchopulmonary System;
• Using Integrative Genomics To Identify and Characterize Emphysema-Associated eQTL;
• Video Telehealth Pulmonary Rehabilitation to Reduce Hospital Readmission in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (Tele-COPD).
